Former Minister for Education and current Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially announced his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pending the official opening of nominations.

In a statement that has since gained significant traction across social media, Dr. Adutwum expressed his aspirations to lead the NPP into Ghana’s next political era.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated.

Dr. Adutwum is widely regarded as a visionary figure in Ghana’s education sector. With over two decades of experience as an educationist in the United States, he returned to Ghana with a mission to transform the country’s educational system. As Minister for Education, he led major reforms, including the rollout of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) schools, and enhanced the focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), aiming to equip Ghanaian youth with practical, future-ready skills.

Before entering Ghanaian politics, Dr. Adutwum founded the New Designs Charter School in Los Angeles, California, where he served as Principal and CEO. The institution was known for delivering quality education to underserved communities and inner-city youth in the U.S., and his success there has significantly influenced his education policy approaches in Ghana.

His early declaration adds to the growing list of influential figures positioning themselves for the NPP’s leadership as the country approaches its next election cycle. Political observers believe Dr. Adutwum’s reformist record, international experience, and deep connection with grassroots communities could make him a formidable contender in the party’s internal race.

While the NPP is yet to officially open nominations, the entry of Dr. Adutwum into the flagbearership conversation is expected to shape political discourse in the coming months. His supporters describe him as a forward-thinking leader whose blend of competence, integrity, and vision could usher in a new era for both the party and the nation.
