In a major step to operationalize Ghana’s 24-hour economy policy, the Ghana Police Service has launched a dedicated 24-Hour Security Secretariat tasked with coordinating all security-related interventions to sustain round-the-clock economic activity nationwide.

The new Secretariat was formally announced by Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, during a passing-out parade for 1,194 newly trained police recruits at the Police Training School in Accra.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister underscored the critical importance of robust security to the success of the 24-hour economy, stressing that the police have an enormous duty to guarantee public safety and maintain law and order at all hours.

The Police Service has a monumental responsibility in ensuring safety and public order across all sectors of the economy, day and night,” he stated.

According to officials, the Secretariat will oversee operational strategies, intelligence gathering, and deployment of personnel to support businesses, institutions, and communities as they adapt to extended hours of operation under the new economic framework.

Welcoming the fresh batch of recruits into the Service, Minister Mubarak cautioned them that their uniforms are not a license to intimidate citizens or tarnish the reputation of the Police. He called on the graduates to embrace professionalism, discipline, and public accountability in discharging their duties.

The demands on police personnel have never been greater,” he noted. “We must live up to the legitimate expectations of the people, especially as manpower continues to dwindle in some specialized areas of the Service.

He further highlighted the urgency of boosting morale among serving officers, while prioritizing continuous training and capacity building to address evolving security challenges.

Authorities say the establishment of the 24-Hour Security Secretariat positions the Police Service as a cornerstone of Ghana’s ambition to create a vibrant, inclusive economy where citizens and enterprises can operate safely, any hour of the day or night.
